Did You Know THIS About Fragrance Oils?

Did You Know THIS About Fragrance Oils?

Why does it matter that you know the truth about fragrance oils? Here’s why:

Fragrance oils are synthetic compounds that are used to add scent to various products, such as perfumes, candles, household cleaners and unfortunately many bath and body products. (Why are we putting the same harsh chemicals on our body that we use to clean our toilets??)

While the research of the dangers of fragrance oils to the hormone system are ongoing, there are many concerns and risks associated with their use.

Most fragrance oils contain chemicals that interfere with the endocrine system, which is responsible for regulating hormones in the body. These chemicals, known as endocrine disruptors, can mimic or block hormones, leading to imbalances in the endocrine system and affecting various bodily functions.

Phthalates are also a group of chemicals commonly used to improve the scent and longevity of fragrances. Some phthalates have been linked to endocrine disruption and have been associated with adverse effects on reproductive and developmental health. Exposure to phthalates through fragrance oils are a concern, especially for pregnant women and for children.

These crazy fragrance oils often contain a mixture of chemicals, some of which trigger allergic reactions and sensitivities for people. These reactions can manifest themselves as skin irritations, respiratory problems, or headaches, which may indirectly affect hormone levels and definitely will affect overall well-being.

Fragrance oil compounds can also emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that contribute to indoor air pollution. Prolonged exposure to these VOCs can exacerbate respiratory conditions, such as asthma.

Certain synthetic fragrance compounds, such as synthetic musks, have been scrutinized for their potential to act as carcinogens and their disruption to the endocrine system.

The most infuriating part is the fragrance industry is not required to disclose the specific chemicals used in fragrance formulations due to trade secret protections. This lack of transparency is incredibly frustrating and makes it difficult for you and I to make informed choices about the products we use.

It is critical to make informed decisions. Our goal at Ancient Soap is to ALWAYS use clean, 100% NATURAL ingredients and to provide accurate information to you, our customers so you can make informed decisions.

So what do we do about this crazy bullsh*t? Here are 5 easy steps to avoid fragrance oils:

  • Choose Natural or Unscented Products: Look for products that use essential oils for fragrance or are labeled as unscented.
  • Read Labels: Look for products that list their ingredients and avoid those with vague terms like "fragrance" or "parfum," which can hide potentially harmful chemicals.
  • Ventilation: Ensure proper ventilation when using products containing fragrance oils to minimize indoor air pollution.
  • Patch Testing: If you're trying a new product, consider conducting a patch test on a small area of skin to check for any adverse reactions.
  • Reduce Use: Limit your exposure to fragranced products, especially if you're pregnant or have preexisting health conditions.

Always make informed decisions for you and your families personal health.
